Menzies Government 1949-1966
- Increase in home owner ratio from around 50% to around 75%;
- The arrival of 1 ¼ million immigrants in ten years.
- Introduced National Health Scheme, based on self help, providing cover for all citizens.
Holt / Gorton / McMahon Government 1966 - 72
- Continuation of the heavy migration programme and provision of services (e.g. English Language Courses) for new citizens;
- Established Australian Institute of Sport;
Howard Government 1996 -07
- Over 800,000 new jobs created since March 1996;
- Unemployment fell to a ten year low of 6.3%;
- Home loan interest rates down from 17% in the late 1980’s to 8%;
- First Home Buyer Grant Scheme
- The National Literacy Plan to improve basic skills for children to read, write, add and subtract;
- New apprenticeships at an all time high with 268,000 young Australians in training.
- Increasing funding to government schools in NSW, more than twice the rate of the NSW Labor Government.
NSW Liberal Governments 1965-1976 and 1988-1992
- Free school transport.
- Introduced Selective High Schools.
- Established the NSW Senior’s Card;
- The establishment of the NSW Senior’s Card;
- The establishment of the Office of Ageing and the Senior’s Media Network to combat negative stereotypes about ageing;
- The abolition of compulsory retirement.
